Connor McDavid Shrugs Off Injury Scare as Oilers Search for Momentum After Game 2 Setback

Connor McDavid brushed aside concerns over a potential injury after a physical Game 2 outing, as the Edmonton Oilers fell 4–2 to the Anaheim Ducks, leveling their first-round playoff series.

The moment in question came early in the second period, when McDavid’s lower right leg appeared to buckle following an awkward collision involving teammate Mattias Ekholm, who was attempting to deliver a check on Anaheim’s Ian Moore. McDavid briefly left the bench but returned soon after, skating cautiously and testing the ankle before rejoining play. Postgame, he downplayed the incident, describing it simply as “rolling up on it a little bit,” and insisted there was no cause for concern.

Despite his return, it has been an uncharacteristically quiet start to the postseason for McDavid, who remains without a point through the opening two games. A costly turnover following his return to the ice further compounded the night, as a weak backhand attempt was intercepted by Alex Killorn, leading to a shorthanded goal for Anaheim. McDavid attributed the miscue to “a little bit of miscommunication.”

Head coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged that the Oilers captain may be placing added pressure on himself during this stretch, emphasizing both his leadership role and his typical influence on the team’s success. While noting that even elite players experience off nights, Knoblauch expressed confidence that McDavid will soon rediscover his rhythm.

Beyond individual struggles, Edmonton’s typically dominant power play has yet to make an impact in the series. After leading the NHL with a 30.6% conversion rate during the regular season, the Oilers have gone scoreless on six opportunities so far in the playoffs. McDavid admitted the unit is still searching for its usual structure and execution, stressing that regaining form will require time and adjustment rather than an instant turnaround.

With the series now tied, attention shifts to Game 3 on Friday night in Anaheim, where Edmonton will look to reset both its captain’s momentum and its offensive efficiency.
