Pianist, composer and GRAMMY®-nominated artist Charu Suri is preparing for one of the most significant creative chapters of her career with the upcoming release of two distinct projects that continue her exploration of global musical traditions through the language of jazz. The albums, Raga Etudes and Bossa Raga, reflect an artist who has steadily built an international reputation for transforming Indian classical traditions into contemporary jazz compositions without compromising the integrity of either genre.
Rather than approaching cultural fusion as a novelty, Suri has spent years developing a sophisticated musical vocabulary where Indian ragas become structural foundations for modern improvisation. Her newest recordings extend that vision even further, pairing accomplished jazz musicians with celebrated artists rooted in centuries-old musical traditions.
Raga Etudes showcases Suri's evolving compositional voice through intricate piano works inspired by Indian ragas while embracing the harmonic freedom of jazz. The project also introduces traditional South Indian instrumentation, including the kanjira, a rarely featured frame drum whose rhythmic complexity brings a distinctive texture to the album. The instrument is performed by internationally acclaimed percussionist V. Selvaganesh, whose mastery of both the kanjira and the vocal percussion art of konnakol has earned global recognition through collaborations with legendary guitarist John McLaughlin and the pioneering fusion ensemble Shakti.
The album's first single, "Journey," arrives August 7 and places Suri's expressive piano alongside Selvaganesh's intricate rhythmic performance, creating a dialogue that bridges contemporary jazz and South Indian classical music. Earlier in the album rollout, listeners will also hear another single featuring GRAMMY®-nominated hammered dulcimer virtuoso Max ZT, an artist widely recognized for connecting Eastern and Western musical traditions through innovative instrumental performance.
Her second project, Bossa Raga, explores another unexpected musical intersection by bringing together the relaxed sophistication of Brazilian bossa nova and the melodic depth of Indian ragas. Among its most anticipated moments are two collaborations with legendary bassist Ron Carter, whose influence spans more than six decades and thousands of recordings. The partnership represents another milestone for Suri as she continues working alongside some of jazz's most respected figures.

The releases arrive during a period of growing recognition for Suri on the international stage. Earlier this year, she received GRAMMY® nominations connected to the 68th GRAMMY® Awards, earning recognition for SHAYAN in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category while also receiving acknowledgment as co-producer of Sounds of Kumbha in the Global Music Album category. The honors followed a sold-out performance in Mumbai and further reinforced her position among a new generation of internationally recognized artists redefining contemporary instrumental music.
Her live schedule continues that momentum. Suri is set to introduce material from the new recordings during her appearance at the L.A. Jazz Festival on August 15 at Ganesha Park in Pomona, California, before returning to Carnegie Hall for what will mark her sixth performance at the iconic New York venue in November.
Over the past decade, Suri has established herself as one of the few Indian-born jazz pianists and composers to build a sustained international presence while remaining deeply connected to the musical traditions that shaped her artistic identity. Her performances have taken audiences from Italy and London to Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., the Boston Jazz Festival, and some of the world's most respected concert halls, including the GRAMMY Museum, Lincoln Center, Birdland, the National Centre for the Performing Arts and Mumbai's historic Royal Opera House Mumbai.
Her compositions have also reached an extraordinary range of collaborators, with performances by acclaimed artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Steve Gadd, John Patitucci, members of the New Jersey Symphony and musicians from Preservation Hall.
Commercially, Suri's recordings have demonstrated that globally inspired jazz can resonate with broad audiences. SHAYAN reached the top of U.S. and international charts, while RAGS & RAGAS climbed to No. 3 on U.S. jazz rankings, reached No. 1 on iTunes India, and introduced her distinctive "raga jazz" approach to listeners well beyond traditional jazz circles.
Beyond performance and recording, Suri has increasingly focused on education and community engagement. As a Steinway educator and founder of the Charu Suri Music Academy, she continues mentoring emerging musicians while also developing a nonprofit wellness jazz initiative that explores the therapeutic relationship between music, mindfulness and emotional well-being.
"Ragas are Indian modal scales meant to be performed at a certain time of day, so they are very healing," Suri said. "A lot of people don't necessarily think of jazz and wellness together. I'm hoping to change that."
Her broader impact has been recognized through numerous honors, including awards from the International Singer Songwriters Association, the InterContinental Music Awards and the Global Music Awards. She also serves as a Governor of the Recording Academy's New York Chapter, reflecting her growing influence beyond the concert stage.
